Featured Shop Friday: Rude Boys
For our 4th installment of Featured Shop Friday, we caught up with Abby Furrer, Women’s Buyer and Shop Manager of Rude Boys up in Banff, AB. Banff is a small snowy town in the Bow Valley, surrounded by some of the best terrain Canada has to offer. In this small town is Rude Boys; the largest Niche dealer in the world, and run by some of the raddest people in all of Canada, eh.
How long has your store been around? Can you give us a brief history of your shop?
Since 1988. We’ve always been rider-owned and all the owners shred.
What trends do you see upcoming in the snowboarding world?
A bigger push in women’s snowboarding, and everyone bringing it back to style as opposed to the ‘go big or go home’ mentality.
Does your shop have a motto?
Keep it rude / Keepin’ it rude since ’88
Where do you and the shop team ride?
This is Abby. She slays. Watch her slay up at Sunshine Village.
Any favorite local hang-outs that you’d like to give a shout out to?
Magpie & Stump is OG and has been around since Banff has been a town.
Best bar: Devil’s Gap
What sets you apart from your competitors?
We were the first shop in the Bow Valley. We have the biggest selection of boards, boots, bindings and even outerwear for both Men and Women in the Bow Valley. Our shop has always been rider-owned, and since day one it’s been about the snowboarding… not the money.
Please tell us about any upcoming initiatives your shop has planned (events, etc).
We put on a lot of movie premiers; almost every week for the month of November every year. We also partner with RedBull every year to do a rail jam on the street, right outside our front door.
Last year we did our first Rude Girls Ride Day at Sunshine Village! Not only did the girls who attended absolutely kill it, but we got a lot of really good feedback and are looking at doing 3 Rude Girls Ride Days this season.
What do you see for the future of the industry?
Snowboarding going back to its roots, and it being about how much fun you are having instead of how many olympic games you’ve made it to. Would love not see any more soccer parents in the sport, too.
Do you have social media links so we can, follow you?
What’s your favorite piece of gear and why?
Personally my favorite board to jump on honestly is the Niche Minx. With all of the boards I have been fortunate to try, I always find myself going back to the Minx. As a shop, we all wear 32 boots.
If you could invent a new piece of gear for snowboarding, what would it be?
Crap this is hard. If anything… maybe a snowboard boot where you could adjust the flexibility of it by pushing a button or something. I’m talking from a soft jibbing boot, to a stiff pow, tree run boot.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Thanks to all of our super rad customers who have been loyal over the years, shop local, support local brands, and f*ck online shoppers. Oh yeah, and keep it Rude.
